To tell or not to tell - that is the question.

So, I'm on Facebook. A lot of you Mahoneys are on facebook - or I should say, a lot of the 30 and under crowd. A few of mom's generation are on facebook (you know who you are). Anyway, I was typing in names of people to see who else I could find on Facebook and decided to give Barkentin a whirl to see how many were out there. Up pops the photographer George Barkentin fan club Facebook page. So I joined. It consists of ex-models who loved him and his family members. So I picked out Heidi Barkentin Famiglietti because her picture looked friendly and emailed her to say I was a relative, explained how, and nice to meet her. She wrote me back right away to say how amazing the internet was and she fondly remembers trips to Poughkeepsie to see Aunt Nancy and cousins Susan, Dan, Ned, and Mary Ann (I only gave her Grammy and Great Grammy's names, so she's legit) and she had always wondered what happened to that branch of the family, blah blah blah.... and how she'd love to get her side and our side together again - she said the O'Connells still always come to visit when she goes to visit family in Fairfield. Not sure which O'Connells she's refering to, but anyway.... So here's the problem. Do I devestate yet another branch of the Barkentin family tree with the information I have on Slater Barkentin? How do you just meet someone on line, swap family stories, and slip in "By the way, your great grandfather was married to 3 different women ... AT THE SAME TIME"? Your thoughts on how to approach this one would be appreciated.

WOW! That is a tricky one to say the least. Where does she live? You could ask if she has ever done any geneology searches maybe and see how she responds. I don't know!!!

Boy, that is a difficult question. She seems so nice and is so friendly. I tend to agree with Nancy, ask her if she has ever done any genealogy searches. And I guess I would wait on sharing your research for now...but that is just my opinion. How wonderful that you found her, though.

I'd agree with my mom. Let us know what happens!

oh you know me. . i say out the bigamist and be done with it!!!!
something like what you have suggested would work. .
then there's always the "hey--i know who your great grandfather is, but which one of his 3 wives is your great grandmother???""
or. . . "Oh, so your family is all illegitimate too, huh? gotta love that freewheeling slater!"
